LGF PP: High-quality Plastic

LGF PP: High-quality Plastic

Podrobnosti
LGF PP (long glass fiber polypropylene) is the key to achieving lightweight. The core lies in the 3D fiber "skeleton" network formed by injection molding, which enables it to have much higher impact toughness, creep resistance and dimensional stability than SGF. Its final performance is highly dependent on the retention of fiber length during the injection molding process.

When the industry talks about "plastic substitution for steel" and "light weighting", long glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (LGF PP) has always been an indispensable core option. Unlike short glass fiber (SGF) materials, the long glass fibers (with a fiber length typically greater than 5mm) in LGF PP composite can form a three-dimensional fiber "skeleton" network inside the molded components after injection molding.
This unique microstructure enables LGF PP plastic pellet to achieve a delicate balance among cost-effectiveness, light weighting, mechanical strength, and processing convenience, making it one of the fastest-growing and most widely used composite materials in the current automotive, household appliances, and industrial sectors.

Performance leap: This is the most direct comparison. The "long" fibers in LGF PP compound resin bring a qualitative change. Its impact strength (especially low-temperature impact), creep resistance, dimensional stability, and long-term durability (anti-fatigue property) far exceed those of SGF PP. In situations where SGF PP cannot meet high stress or dynamic load requirements, LGF PP is the preferred upgrade solution.
Appearance differences: SGF PP polymer is prone to floating fibers and has a poorer surface finish. While LGF PP material achieves a better surface appearance through excellent process control and even reduces the need for post-processing (such as spraying).

For engineering plastics (LGF PA6, PBT)

Core advantages (cost and process): The greatest strength of LGF PP is its cost and low density. Its density is lower than LGF PA6, which means that when manufacturing components of the same volume, LGF PP requires less material and is lighter in weight.
Weaknesses and trade-offs: The weakness of LGF PP lies in its base material (PP). Its heat resistance, ultimate strength, and hardness are not as good as PA6 (nylon). However, in many non-engine compartment automotive applications or appliance structural components, the short-term heat resistance of 120℃ - 150℃ is sufficient. The low hygroscopic (PA6's performance changes when soaked in water) and chemical resistance (such as resistance to acids and alkalis) of LGF PP instead become prominent advantages.

The core battlefield of light weighting: LGF PP plastic granules is the pioneer in replacing die-cast aluminum and stamping steel. In applications such as the front module of cars and seat frames, LGF PP composite can achieve a certain℃of weight reduction, while significantly reducing assembly costs and time through "component integration design" (integrating multiple small parts into one injection molded part). Design Freedom: The complex structural design freedom brought about by injection molding is incomparable to that of metal stamping and casting.

The core of LGF PP's performance lies in the length of the fibers retained in the final product. Only when the material's length is not damaged can the performance be effectively maintained.

LGF PP usually adopts the pulling process rather than the traditional twin-screw extrusion. This process involves the continuous glass fiber bundles being "immersed" in the molten PP resin before being cut. This ensures that the fiber length in the particles is consistent with the particle length from the very beginning.
This is the biggest challenge at the application end. If the customer's injection molding process is improper (such as excessive screw rotation speed, excessive back pressure, or too small gate), the long fibers will be severely sheared and shortened during the plasticization and injection process, causing LGF PP to "degrade" into SGF PP, resulting in significant performance degradation. Therefore, providing injection molding process guidance is an important part of the service chain of LGF PP material suppliers.

Application Analysis - Why LGF PP?

  • LGF PP composite has replaced stainless steel or SGF materials here. It needs to withstand the centrifugal force at high rotational speed (high rigidity), tolerate detergents and water (chemical resistance), and work in a humid and hot environment for a long time (anti-settling).
Requires high dynamic balance (dimensional stability) and fatigue resistance.
Such as electric drills and cutting machines, require extremely high impact resistance and durability.

Front-end module frame: This is a classic application of LGF PP material. It requires high rigidity to support components such as radiators and headlights, and high toughness to withstand low-speed collisions. The balanced performance of LGF PP perfectly matches these requirements.
Requires extremely high dimensional stability to prevent deformation or abnormal noises under sunlight and low temperatures, and also needs rigidity to support the complex instruments and electronic equipment.
It integrates door locks, elevators, speakers, etc. The water resistance, high rigidity and impact resistance of LGF PP are extremely crucial in this application.
Electric vehicles have a more urgent need for light weighting. The application of LGF PP in the lower shell of battery enclosures is experiencing a significant increase. It offers excellent insulation, impact protection, flame retardant (through modification), and light weighting.

  • Pump valve body, impeller, water meter housing. Utilizing its excellent resistance to hydrolysis and chemical corrosion.
Templates, scaffolding planks, etc., taking advantage of their high strength and reusable nature.

A: The LGF PP material is significantly lower than the LGF PA6. When manufacturing components of the same volume, LGF PP can achieve the advantage of reducing more weight, which is crucial in automotive light weighting.

Q: What is the relationship between the performance of LGF PP and the content of glass fibers (such as 30%, 40%)?

A: The higher the content, the higher the rigidity (bending modulus), strength and heat resistance (heat distortion temperature HDT). However, the material's toughness (impact strength) may decrease, and the melt flowability will deteriorate. LGF40% is a common specification that balances rigidity and toughness.

A: The lower shell of the battery pack. Utilizing its lightweight nature, excellent impact resistance (providing protection for the battery cells), electrical insulation properties, as well as (through modification) high flame retardant (UL 94 V-0) and dimensional stability.
